Strength and flexibility.
The healthy human spine has both qualities. When a child’s spine requires correction, Dr. Daniel J. Sucato brings his own strength and flexibility to bear on the problem. In many cases along with the health benefits a dramatic improvement in alignment and appearance is realized thereby changing lives for the better.
Sucato, a universally known pediatric orthopedic surgeon, practices at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, in Dallas. He also directs the hospital’s Center for Excellence in Spine Research, where scientists from neurobiologists to biomechanical engineers study ways to better treat children – most only a few years old – with deformities and functional issues from spine, hip and other orthopedic problems.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions in pediatric orthopedic surgery – how to impact these kids early to improve the long-term health of their musculoskeletal system,” Sucato says. “It’s an opportunity to make real strides in research.”
The American Medical Association recognizing his accomplishments, honored him recently with the Dr. William Beaumont Award in Medicine, given to physicians under age 50 (he is 41) who have distinguished themselves in their field.
His is a career born at UB Medical School, where the late Dr. Robert Gillespie, Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics recognized his potential to be a leader in his field, and expressed that vision to other professionals and family members.
Because of their close professional and personal relationship, Dr. Gillespie’s sudden passing was a grevious shock to the recent graduate at that time. The loss of this admired leader was felt throughout the medical community.
A Buffalo native, Sucato is part of a UB family; his father and two brothers graduated from the School of Engineering, and another brother attended UB before finishing at SUNY downstate with a degree in music.
Now his work and that of his colleagues has blossomed into exciting advances. Where frequently pediatric orthopedists have fused the spines of their young patients, Sucato and his colleagues implant rods that correct the spine’s orientation but also allow it to grow with the child. Another area of investigation is how to prevent post-surgical internal scarring that can inhibit lung function. Sucato has traveled extensively throughout the country and, in Europe and China to present on his research. He also teaches at the University of Texas Southwestern University Medical Center.
Sucato and his beautifulwife, Lisa, have three young children of their own, giving him a heightened sense of the awesome responsibility he has undertaken in treating his young patients.
But the rewards are great. One need only look at the photographs of a child distorted with an acute spinal deformation before treatment and after correction, that childs near normal appearance. That’s a huge reward.
“Some kids want to add to my rewards”. One patient, now a teenage girl, endured surgery to correct a severe bend in her spine. “She painted me the most beautiful picture, a vase with flowers, and it hangs in my office now. That’s what it’s all about.”

University Medical Center at Dallas, received the American Medical
Association’s 2005 William Beaumont Award in Medicine for outstanding
young physician. He was presented the award on November 5 at a
ceremony in Dallas.
The William Beaumont Award in Medicine was established by the
AMA as an encouragement to young physicians. It is presented each
year to a physician under age 50 who has distinguished himself or
herself in medical science. The AMA Board of Trustees selects the
recipient from among nominees submitted to its Awards Committee.
In presenting the award, the AMA stated: “Dr. Sucato has been a
staff orthopaedic surgeon at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children

challenges in spinal surgery. The center facilitates discussions between
orthopaedic surgeons, researchers, biomedical engineers, movementscience
specialists, orthotists, radiologists and fellows to profoundly
influence spine research and the treatment of patients with scoliosis.
“In 2003, Dr. Sucato served as one of three International Traveling
Fellows for the Scoliosis Research Society. He delivered research presentations,
studied and discussed landmark cases, observed surgeries at
centers throughout Europe and collaborated with international spine

Justin Daniel Sucato, born September 16th, 1963, South Buffalo Mercy Hosp., Buffalo NY.

Justin Julie and Olivia Anna June 10th, 2006

Justin and Julie married July 29th, 1989.

Precious Olivia Anna at age 4.Bright and articulate beyond her years, shows organizational and leadership qualities.

Our son Justin is President and General Manager of Steamatic,
Quality Construction and Domenica Property Management of North East Ohio. The three companies will be known as Carrara Enterprises starting early next year. The companies have been growing at a 40% average annual rate since inception. As Justin likes to say “It all started out of a garage with me, a truck and an answering machine.”

Steamatic property of North East Ohio (NEO) was started by Justin in 1997. It is the premier restoration company in North East Ohio and preferred by most of the major insurance companies in the area. The company specializes in fire, water and mold restoration. In addition it has a residential and commercial cleaning division.

His Quality Construction company provides a comprehensive set of services performing disaster construction rebuilds and emergency repairs, major renovations and large commercial construction projects. One of the most interesting recent projects contracted is the exterior restoration of a church in Atwater, Ohio. Work will be started in July this year on the 80 foot steeple of this historic landmark, founded in 1841.

Before founding Steamatic of NEO and later his construction and property management companies, he earned two engineering degrees, a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from SUNY at Buffalo in 1985 and the University of Cincinnati in 1990 respectively.

Justin’s management experience prior to 1997 included two years of extensive training in GE’s Management program. General Electric, is regarded by Fortune as one the world’s most best companies. From there, Justin excelled in positions in of Manufacturing Engineering, Material Purchasing and Production in some of GE’s outstanding Transportation and Jet Engine facilities. His last production management assignment was as a Plant Manager over 300 associates for Collins & Aikman, an automotive supply facility.
Justin’s last position in corporate America was as a consultant with KPMG a big 6 consulting firm providing Supply Chain and Manufacturing Management expertise for Fortune 100 companies.

The major lessons learned from his broad corporate experience in Customer Service, Quality, and Superior Team building were invaluable.

Because of his dislike of the travel demands in his corporate position and his desire to utilize the knowledge he had gained to it’s fullest extent Justin started his own business.
His strategy was to start a company he could grow quickly with little investment and great upside potential with minimal capital risk.

All three of his companies sponsor charity events. Two of the major annual events are the June Charity golf outing that the three companies host and the February Casino night.

Justin loves to spend time with Julie, his wife of 17 years and his beautiful daughter Olivia. Justin states that his greatest joy will be observing with Julie, the remarkable achievements of his daughter Olivia surpass his own, as they ride her coat tails to the top.
